Gov. Hochul Announces New JFK Terminal Plans

Gov. Kathy Hochul recently announced plans to renovate John F. Kennedy International airport. The $9.5 billion plan is focused on transforming JFK into a world-class travel airport and comes after the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey reached a new agreement with The New Terminal One (NTO) regarding the renovation. NTO is a group of financial sponsors such as Carlyle, JLC Infrastructure and Ullico, who will fully fund the project.

The project was initially scheduled to begin in 202 but the terms of the agreement needed to be revised, due to the impact of the pandemic on airline travel,. Construction of the project is expected to commence in 2022. The first gates are expected to be open in 2026, with full completion of the project anticipated for 2030.

The expansion will total 2.4 million square feet and be constructed in the current sites of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, as well as the former Terminal 3 site. Details of the project include 23 new gates, arrival spaces and check in halls designed to enhance customer experience. Other features will include an indoor green space, lounges and family-friendly amenities.

As part of the project, Port Authority will undertake the construction of infrastructure upgrades such as parking, roads, utilities and a new electrical substation. When completed, The New One Terminal will be the largest international terminal at JFK and one of the top airport terminals in the world.

Governor Hochul said in a recent statement, “As we recover from this pandemic, I want to ensure that everyone traveling to New York has a welcoming and streamlined experience, and that New Yorkers have the modernized transportation hubs they deserve.”

The New Terminal One project is one of many renovation undertakings at JFK. Three other major projects include the $3.9 billion development of the new Terminal 6, the $1.5 billion expansion of Terminal 4 and the $425 million expansion of JFK’s Terminal 8.

Financial sponsors’ investment in this new terminal reflects support for the return of air travel and as well as confidence in the economic recovery of New York.
