Cornell Tech Urban Proposes tech-based Solutions for NYC

The Jacobs Institute’s Urban Tech Hub at Cornell Tech recently released the final “Rebooting NYC” report. In the report, the team’s researchers propose urban tech solutions for New York City’s biggest challenges.

The Urban Tech Hub is a group of 13 researchers, made up of current and former students at Cornell Tech. The team released a draft of the report in May of 2021. Since then, the Urban Tech Hub has collaborated with New York government officials, as well as tech and community leaders to strengthen their proposals. The team also allocated feedback from a range of New Yorkers representing different backgrounds, neighborhoods and perspectives.

The report provides guidance for Mayor Eric Adams and his administration on how to utilize urban technology. Topics outlined in the report include issues of privacy and security, working to improve the management of the built environment and ensuring equity in the digital economy.

The report also highlights three new topics, such as technology’s potential to improve sanitation and recycling in the city and using in-building battery storage as a way to transition to a clean electric supply.

Founding director of the Urban Tech Hub Micheal Samuelian said in a recent statement that the report specifies opportunities for the new administration to enact change through tech policy.

“With the new administration being sworn in just days ago, we are releasing this final report with optimism that it will help guide tech policy to propel the city’s recovery and secure New York’s City’s position as a dynamic centre for new technologies,” said Samuelian.
