Facebook Sets Sights on Virtual Reality

Tech giants Microsoft, Apple and Facebook, are beginning to innovate virtual reality-based products. Facebook’s leader attended a tech start-up conference last month in Europe to discuss these innovations.

For three days, tech startup companies presented innovations created to streamline work online. The latest trends discussed were the metaverse, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg weighed in on the benefits of the metaverse for work functions. In a discussion, Zuckerberg described the advantage of maximizing entrepreneurship in the VR world would be a convenient way to attend staff meetings and other work events. He likened it to a superior version of current virtual conference calls. Zuckerberg calls the ability to be present spatially around work colleagues as a “powerful” way to “connect” communities and remote spaces and serves as the top catalyst behind his future VR innovations.

AR/VR glasses will allow users of this high-tech feature to step into a virtual reality where they will be transported into their office space, conference meeting, or work function. As the Covid-19 pandemic enabled office workers to work remotely, the metaverse will continue this home-office space.

The metaverse first gained popularity with online gamers playing in expanded worlds, such as World of Warcraft. Users create an avatar that is a representation of themselves to interact with other players in an online database. Game platforms, Fortnite, and even Roblox gained notoriety in recent years as a platform for children and teens. Roblox’s ultimate vision is to create an online space where billions of people may gather for events, business meetings, games and shared work. Roblox’s advantage is that it already possesses its own economy, so the online feature contains promising essentials on one platform.
