Mayor Adams Responds to Subway Shooting

New York City Mayor Eric Adams recently released a video responding to the subway shooting on an MTA train in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The shooter was on the run for nearly 30 hours before turning himself in to police as civilians spotted him moving around the city.

In the approximately two-minute video, the mayor urged New Yorkers with information regarding the incident to contact the New York Police Department (NYPD) and thanked first responders for their help in aiding those injured in the shooting. 

The shooting took place early Tuesday morning when a passenger opened fire on a Manhattan-bound N train at the 36th street subway station in Brooklyn. At least 29 people were treated at nearby hospitals following the incident, 10 of which were treated for gunshot wounds. 

Mayor Adams appeared on CNN Tuesday afternoon, calling for a national response to the increase in violent crime. The mayor told the network that his administration has worked to remove over one thousand guns from New York City streets, but needs assistance in addressing the uptick in crime.

Mayor Adams’ statements were made from the Gracie Mansion, as he recovers from COVID-19. The mayor tested positive for the virus on Sunday, his official 100th day in office. Fabien Levy, press secretary for the mayor, said in a recent statement that the mayor would “immediately begin taking the anti-viral medications offered for free to New York City.” The mayor has canceled all public events for the upcoming week, though he will continue to work remotely as he isolates.
