COVID VACCINE: How to get Vaccinated at Yankee Stadium, Javits Center [VIDEO]
New York City’s famed Yankee Stadium, in collaboration with New York, SOMOS Community Care and the New York National Guard, has opened the second mega-location for the COVID-19 vaccine distribution today.
The Bronx-based baseball field intentionally serves citizens here to address prior concerns of inequity since the area, comprised mostly of people of color, was one of the hardest-hit regarding mortality rate. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio stated that instead of the World Series banners, the stadium will now be “recognized as a place where the people of the surrounding community in the Bronx can receive the vaccine doses that they need and deserve.”
Governor Andrew Cuomo said, “opening a mass vaccination site at Yankee Stadium – the Bronx’s most iconic landmark – is the perfect solution to helping this borough get vaccinated and defeat COVID once and for all.”
The NYC Vaccine for All Campaign was created by the city’s Racial Equity and Inclusion department to ensure “trust and access” to Coronavirus health resources in 27 neighborhoods, which were affected the hardest by the virus. The campaign will work closely with community partners to spread messages to underrepresented populations so they can access the vaccination and further antibody testing.
The New York Yankees also complimented the city’s tenacity. “The New York Yankees recognize the devastating effect COVID-19 has had on our borough, and it is our privilege to have Yankee Stadium as a host site for providing vaccines to Bronx residents,” the organization said.
Another mega-site, which opened last month in the Manhattan borough is also distributing free doses. The Javits Center, which routinely houses national conventions, opened up as the first mega COVID-19 vaccination site on January 13. Appointments are required for this Manhattan location, and those interested can call 833-NYS-4-VAX (833-697-4829) to register. Residents can also obtain a parking discount.
