Black Girls Code Take NYC, Members Nationwide To Screen Hidden Figures Movie
Black Girls Code took its organization members for a day at the movies during the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. The group, which has a chapter in New York City, hosted and took its girls to screen Hidden Figures. The film, which focuses on a group of African-American women who helped NASA with major space projects in its early days, highlights diversity in technology and science. Award winning actors Taraji P. Henson and Kevin Costner were among the all-star cast.
The mission of Black Girls Code is simple, education, diversity and inclusion in technology. Since 2011, the organization holds meetings, community outreach, workshops and after-school programs to teach coding to African-American girls and young women ages 7-17. San Francisco-based Black Girls Code operates around the country including New York City and Chicago. Technology and engineering professional Kimberly Bryant, is founder and CEO of the organization.
