Brooklyn College Business School Starts New Risk Management Program

The Murray Koppelman School of Business at Brooklyn College will launch a new program in collaboration with global professional services firm Aon and The Spencer Educational Foundation. The program is aimed at teaching students the fundamentals of risk management and promoting diversity among the incoming workforce.

The program will offer undergraduate students new courses and other opportunities to learn about careers in risk management, as well as career opportunities in insurance, finance and other professions. The first course being offered in the program is a three-credit class focusing on fundamentals of risk management and insurance. The course will be offered during Brooklyn College’s 2022 winter intersession.

This new course will bring students in contact with real world scenarios dealing with risk management, with the help of risk Aon professionals offering guest lectures. Students in the course will also be invited to apply to internships at Aon.

Risk management is a particular focus for the program as faculty at the Koppelman School recognize it is an essential element of a modern business education, particularly given today’s business and economic environment.

Students enrolled in the program’s courses will be eligible for scholarships as well. Aon has committed to offering 25 students up to full course tuition scholarships. At least half of the award recipients will come from traditionally underrepresented and diverse backgrounds, as part of Aon and the Koppelman School’s commitment to encouraging a more diverse and inclusive workforce.

The new risk management course is just the beginning of Aon and the Koppelman’s school partnership. Dean of the Murray Koppelman School of Business Qing Hu, said in a recent statement that the school plans to develop more courses as the collaboration continues.

“We plan to develop a set of new courses with Aon to provide students with a better understanding of the various types of risks that households and businesses face, while also getting a broad understanding of the types of careers that are available within the insurance industry and risk management profession,” said Hu.
